A viral tweet on social media (X) claims to capture Bashar al-Assad and Asma Al-Assad, walking through Moscow’s streets after his supposed resignation two days ago.
➢ Claim: After resigning and leaving Syria, the past President Bashar al-Assad and his wife, Asma al-Assad, are seen in a picture walking in Paris streets.
A widely shared false context tweet and post on social media said that Syria’s president, Bashar al-Assad, has resigned and fled directly to Russia. The post or tweet states that Bashar al-Assad and his wife Asma were spotted walking in the streets of Moscow, where they were living in peace after fleeing to Syria. These posts and tweets had been spread widely the past few days on social media and it had been shared by a lot of people.
The rumor spread due to the events happening in Syria as it had been a few days since Bashar Al-Asad resigned and his family fled to Moscow and there is a lot of assumptions on where he is right now.
Accordingly, the claim is shown to be untrue. This photo wasn’t shot in Moscow and has nothing to do with what is currently happening. The truth is that the photo was taken in 2010 while Bashar and his wife were in Paris on a formal visit.

In order to verify the legitimacy and provenance of this widely shared photo, a number of tools and search engines were used. The image was examined using Yandex to make sure it wasn’t artificial intelligence (AI) or fake. Yandex also offered many viewpoints and locations for the same image to ensure its credibility. According to TinEye and Google reverse image, multiple versions of the photograph were found, and numerous sources connected it to the 2010 trip to Paris, France. lastly, through manual research on google using operators it was found that Miguel Medina, a photographer that works with Getty Images, was identified as the original source who took the picture and was posted on Getty images website.

Highlighting the elements in the picture
Both of them can also be seen walking across the Parisian streets in the shot, which was taken when the Assads were on a formal visit, which helps in giving some background details to verify the location in the photo taken. Firstly, the NOUVELLES FRONTIERES which is a travel agency, and it is well-known for owning different locations in all of France. Secondly, the Tabac which is a French name for a tobacco shop, and it is so popular across all France streets. Lastly, the black bollards that line the roadway.
In conclusion, the exact location of Bashar Al-Asasd remains unknown, and there had been rumors that Bashar may have escaped to Russia. Recycled photos like this one are frequently used to support false narratives, and the uncertainty surrounding his location has led to a rise in disinformation.
